Yotsuba Kokoro is a fifth-grader who is very clumsy but also very caring about her belongings, having learnt from her grandmother that everything has a soul. One day, she witnesses the birth of a strange creature from one of her coloured pencils: a Cocotama named Rakitama. With Kokoro now permanently linked to the Contract of Secrecy, she must keep Rakitama’s kind a secret to the world. As the two live together, they develop friendship between each other while meeting other Cocotamas.
